about

Before the release of the 6th Sinister Locals albums in the spring, this seemed to be the right time to release the first retrospective compilation of releases by Nathan Hall and the Sinister Locals, drawing tracks from all 5 vocal albums. However, to give the record a twist I unleashed Soft Hearted Scientists producer Frank Naughton on the Mute Effigies Soundtracks instrumental album to create a very trippy song suite that is just short of 20 minutes long. I said "I know these songs too well so surprise me." He went to town on the tracks, editing them as he wanted to, and adding a few lovely ambient transitions and the result became "The Kraken of Roath Park Lake". The title was inspired by my walks around the lake with my niece, to whom I tell so many ridiculous stories. She knows they're made up but she likes them. It was also inspired by reading about for example Greek myths and overlaying them on the most mundane aspects of modern day Cardiff.

SHINDIG! MAGAZINE REVIEW
NATHAN HALL & THE SINISTER LOCALS
The Kraken Of Roath Park Lake
★★★★ THE HIP REPLACEMENT CD
Nathan Hall and company are now five albums into their career as a Soft Hearted Scientists side project, and this timely retrospective means there’s never been a better time to get to know the locals. Debut Effigies (2017) is a love letter to The Summer Of Love, and four of the five tracks culled from it will appeal to fans of The Small Faces and Syd-era Floyd. The fifth, ‘The Sighing Song’, is shimmeringly gorgeous. The following year’s Tunguska Tydfil includes the synth-tastic ‘Windmills On Fire’, while ‘The Phoenix Of Albany Road’ retains the psych aspect of the debut but adopts a more pastoral outlook, a flavour maintained for much of this compilation. Scattersparks (2019) is represented by the stately ‘Rooms’ and ‘Roman Soldiers (Dead And Bored)’, surely a favourite of hauntologists everywhere. The collection is brought bang up to date with the previously unreleased 20-minute title track.

about

Nathan Hall and the Sinister Locals and Soft Hearted Scientists Cardiff, UK

The music mixes psychedelia with baroque touches, and analogue electronics and seeks to create the same confusion of the senses that a prime Beach Boys track does. Is it summer or is it Christmas? Neither. Its both simultaneously. The lyrics walk the dark side of Sunny Psychedelia Street and know that all is not well with the world. Burning effigies and suicidal Ice Road Truckers all feature. ... more
